What the Official MCP Registry does
The Registry is the official centralized metadata repository for publicly accessible MCP servers. It supports namespace management, standard server.json records, connection metadata, and a REST API used by clients and aggregators.
It is not a universal marketplace taxonomy, recommendation monitor, or app publisher. Publication says an authenticated metadata record exists; it should not be presented as a ranking, security endorsement, or recommendation.
What a distribution platform adds
A distribution platform begins outside any one protocol. It audits public identity, records which sources providers consult, checks product presence, prepares owner-approved actions, and reruns prompts to measure retrieval, mentions, and recommendations.
For an MCP server, the Registry is one important source in that loop. For a non-MCP app, repositories, packages, documentation, structured pages, editorial sources, or other directories may carry the evidence.
Use them together without conflating proof
Publish accurate metadata to the Registry, verify the API record, and let downstream indexes consume it. Then use experiments to learn whether those sources are consulted for the server's job and whether the product appears in the answer.
Report the chain in stages: registry published, directory retrieved, provider sourced, product mentioned, product recommended, tool invoked. Each success remains inspectable and each gap actionable.
- Registry: standardized MCP metadata and namespace authority.
- Distribution platform: cross-source evidence, action prioritization, and recurring experiments.
- Product owner: final claims, credentials, publication approval, and runtime correctness.
